Rogers Park Condos and Rogers Park Real Estate

Rogers Park (often referred to as East Rogers Park) is the northernmost neighborhood of Chicago on Lake Michigan. It is bound by the City of Evanston at Juneway/Howard Street to the north, Ridge Boulevard to the west, Devon Avenue to the south and Lake Michigan to the east. The neighborhood just to the west is often called Rogers Park or West Rogers Park, although its formal name is West Ridge. Rogers Park is anchored by Loyola University Chicago.

The Rogers Park area was developed on what once was the convergence of two Native American trails, now known as Rogers Avenue and Ridge Boulevard, pre-dating modern metropolitan Chicago. The Potawatomi and various other regional tribes often settled in Rogers Park from season to season. Rogers Park was named after a pioneer settler who was an early trader with the Native Americans in the area.

By the end of the nineteenth century large houses on sizable lots clustered between Greenview and Ridge Avenues and north of Touhy along Sheridan Road. When the Elevated Railroad (now the Red Line “L”) opened the Howard Station in 1908, the population jumped dramatically. The construction of single-family homes slowed as subdividers built multiunit dwellings and the neighborhood's suburban qualities faded. Large apartment building construction was most intense north of Howard Street and along the “L” tracks in the eastern portion of the community.

Rogers Park has several elevated Red Line stations as well as its own Metra “Rogers Park” station, where travel times to downtown Chicago are 20 to 23 minutes. Rail connections between Rogers Park and Chicago date from the 1860s.

Over the years Rogers Park's population has grown increasingly diverse and older. The Irish, Germans, and Luxemburgers represented the major ethnic groups during the early years of community building. By the late 1960s the neighborhood had become home to Russian and Eastern European immigrants. The 1970s saw the movement of immigrants from Asia and the Americas as well as growth in the African American population.

The 2000 census data showed it to be one of the most diverse American communities in the country, with a robust mix of ethnic backgrounds, languages, age diversity, and a wide range of family incomes. This diversity has been affected by the gentrification of the community. Much of the rental housing has been converted to condominiums over the last 10 years. The rental units housed racial and ethnic minority households, while more than 90% of the new homeowners are white households.
